Bourne Again Kills the Competition; Rod Not So Hot

Exceeding studio projections and last week’s estimates by the 2 Daves (in the $62-$63 million ballpark), The Bourne Ultimatum was a knock-out in its opening weekend with a great $69.3 million, bringing in a $18,900 per screen average from 3,660 screens. This is, of course, not only the biggest opening for any of the three Bourne films, but is also the personal best for star Matt Damon. Benefiting from outstanding reviews and terrific word of mouth, look for director Paul Greengrass’ thriller to top the magic $200 million mark, making it the seventh film (looks like The Simpsons may not do it after all) this summer to pass the milestone.

Speaking of The Simpsons, it fell a big 66% in its second week for $25.1 million, suggesting all the hardcore fans showed up en masse in the first week. Still, it’s on track to finish with about $190 million, assuring that it will be one of the Top Ten films of the summer. Way to go, Homer. Dave G. predicted a 42% drop with $42.9 million, while Dave B. was only slightly closer with a 51% drop and a $36.6 million guess. Maybe the third time will be the charm for our predictions.

Flying to second best of the newcomers was Underdog, Disney’s live-action version of the 1960s cartoon series. It brought in an okay $11.6 million in its opening weekend, less than $1 million away from Dave G.’s $12.5 million estimate. Dave B. slightly underguessed the underachieving crime-fighter with an underwhelming $10.3 million. Two other openers barely made the Top Ten for the weekend: Hot Rod, with SNL’s Andy Samberg, opened to a disappointing $5.3 million, less than half our already pessimistic estimates; and the girl-power Bratz earned a weak $4.2 million, a little closer to our two estimates.

Dave G. got it exactly right predicting a 45% decline for Chuck and Larry, which brought in $10.6 million, though most of the other holdovers were lower than anticipated, indicating that the summer – sorry to say – is on its way to wrapping up the (very big) season.
